Concerned when she failed to show up for a recording session, 'Full Tilt Boogie Band' manager John Cooke discovers the body of Janis Joplin on the floor of her Hollywood hotel room. The sensational blues singer who had taken the music world by storm after her standout performance as the lead singer for 'Big Brother and the Holding Company' from the 'Monterey International Pop Festival' had died of an apparent heroin overdose.
Joplin came to the city by the bay hitchhiking alongside friend and Frisco music promoter Chet Helms, from her hometown of Port Arthur, Texas in 1963. Once there she quickly became connected with the burgeoning music scene making friends with such local acts as the 'Charlatans', members of 'Jefferson Airplane', and the 'Grateful Dead', even sharing an on again-off again romantic relationship with 'Grateful Dead' keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan.
